Insulating oil is widely used in high-voltage electrical equipment such as power transformers, oil circuit breakers, oil filled cables, power capacitors, and bushings. Its functions include the following three aspects:

Firstly, insulation function. Immerse and protect solid insulation such as transformers, cables, and capacitors, fill bubbles in the insulation to prevent external air and moisture from entering, and ensure reliable insulation.

Secondly, the cooling effect. For electrical equipment such as transformers, hot oil is cooled by a radiator and then returned to the transformer body to circulate and cool the insulation oil inside the box, maintaining the temperature of the transformer within a certain range.

Thirdly, the arc extinguishing function. The insulating oil in the oil circuit breaker not only has insulation function, but also has arc extinguishing function, which promotes the circuit breaker to quickly and reliably cut off the arc.

In order for insulating oil to perform its own function, it should have lower viscosity, lower freezing point, higher flash point and withstand voltage strength, as well as good stability.

During operation, insulating oil is often subjected to oxygen, moisture, high temperature, sunlight, and other factors, which gradually deteriorate its performance and prevent it from fully exerting its function. To ensure good insulation oil performance, it is necessary to conduct regular tests on the insulation oil.
